bay. this map here helps break it down. the california breast cancer mapping project found portions of san mateo, santa clara and alameda counties had breast cancer rates that were 10% to 20% higher than the state average from 2000 to 2008. these higher-than-average rates were also found in slices of sonoma, napa and solano counties. however, the study does not list a cause for these rates, but it's long been known breast cancer risk factors include everything from drinking alcohol daily to taking certain hormone replacements. and this behavior tends to be common among higher income women, which, of course, the bay area does have. still, the study does not say this correlation is in fact the cause of the higher breast cancer rates that we're seeing in the study. so if you're a woman living in the bay area, what do you make of the study? first of all, don't forget breast cancer can be genetic and doctors also worry about certain environmental factors. more reasons for us women to practice good breast care and that includes staying current on our mammograms. jon. >> thank you very muc

in that libyan attack has been laid to rest in northern california. a wreath of roses and an american flag are some of the items on chris steven' grave. according to the paper stevens was buried there on friday. he was 52 years old and grew up in piedmont. >>> there is a new study on breast cancer that finds parts of the bay area have much higher rates of invasive breast cancer compared to the rest of california. those areas include the western half of contra costa county. the northern most part of alameda county, an area that runs through alameda, santa clara and san mateo reports. san mateo news reports breast cancer rates in those areas were 10% to 20% higher than the state average from the years 2000 and 2008. breast cancer rates have been a major concern in marin county. >>> well, an iraq war veteran who said he was beaten by police during an occupy protest and needed surgery for a lacerated spleen is suing the alameda county sheriff's office. he claims the alameda county sheriff's office made his injuries worse by denying him medical care after he was arrested and jailed last novembe

in the northern california airport, why it took so long for these passenger's nightmares to end. . >>> a travel nightmare, their flight to hawaii was delayed it 6 hours. the discount air is a $99 one- way ticket but because of mechanical problems, passengers waited and slept in the airport for hours. they say there was a communication breakdown with the airline. >> now they have turned around and told us after the 11th time we will be held up yet again so it was 2:00 and 3:00 and 4:00 but they say it was unfortunate they were arranging vouchers for other flights. >>> crews had to clean up twice in one day. they say crews came out to clean up graffiti only to have vandals strike again in one day and it is not the first time but two years ago a plaque was his he willed -- chiseled off. >> it shows a lack of respect for the men and women who have done everything to protect our right to free speech and free tonight. >> graffiti was likely gang- related. >> well, this friday is the deadline for baseball teams to sign their unsigned players and for the giants that includes star player brian wilson.

research this week suggests that to bay area regions are among four in california with substantially higher than average rates of invasive breast cancer. the higher rate regions include the western half of contra costa county, the northernmost part of alameda county and a swath running around the southern end of the bay through alameda, santa clara and san mateo counties. breast cancer rates in the four regions were 10 to 20% higher than the state average. the cause of these higher rates is still a mystery for researchers. >> the food and drug administration has stopped operations at a new mexico peanut butter processor and as it cracks down on salmonella poisoning. fda investigators found salmonella at sun land inc's plan after dozens of people in 20 states were sickened by pena butter made at the plant and sold a trader joe's stores. the fda action will prevent the company from distributing any fool. the fda was granted the power to shut down the operations under a food safety law that passed last year. we're also watching wall street and we are waiting for the opening bell. >> will it cl
